Senator Franken: Sessions Should Come Back And Explain Himself
Senator Al Franken on Sunday said that he believes Attorney General Jeff Sessions should return to the Senate to explain the lie he told the Senate committee during his confirmation hearing.
It was revealed this week the Jeff Sessions had lied to the Senate about his contacts with Russia during the campaign. Sessions has since recused himself from the investigation into whether Trump and his associates had colluded with Russia to interfere with the election.
Franken told ABC’s “This Week,” he “would like to give him some benefit of the doubt. He needs to come back before the committee and explain this.”
It was Franken’s question during the committee hearing that Sessions answered with a lie, potentially perjuring himself.
Franken also said that Sessions needs to answer for why he did not correct the record until after news reports broke that he had lied. Senator Franken noted that Sessions had seven weeks to correct the record.
Franken did stop short of saying he think’s the attorney general should be prosecuted for lying to the Senate.
“I don’t want to go there and definitively say we should be prosecuting the attorney general,” Franken said.
Senator Franken also noted that during his press conference last week, Sessions quoted his conversation with the Russian ambassador – implying that it is disingenuous for the attorney general to say he simply forgot the meeting during the Senate hearing.
Franken also called out Donald Trump saying we don’t know what the Russians have on Donald Trump.
