House Republicans Just Voted To Let Internet Providers Sell Your Browsing History
On Tuesday, Republicans in the House of Representatives voted to allow internet service providers to sell customers browsing history. Republicans voted to block Obama-era internet privacy rules passed by the FCC.
The FCC rules would have given customers control over how their internet service provider can use their data and would have required companies like Comcast and Time Warner to get permission from their customers before using their information to sell targeted advertising.
The bill passed the Senate last week and Donald Trump is expected to sign the law.
Democrats and privacy advocates have said that the FCC privacy rules would have helped protect consumer privacy.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement, “Your broadband provider knows deeply personal information about you and your family – where you are, what you want to know, every site you visit, and more.”
“They can even track you when you’re surfing in a private browsing mode. You deserve to be able to insist that those intimate details be kept private and secure.”
