Senate Democrats Successfully Filibuster Neil Gorsuch
After successful filibuster, attention turns to Mitch McConnell who has vowed to change Senat rules in what is called the “nuclear option.”
Democrats succeeded in at least temporarily blocking Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court on Thursday. Senators voted 55 to 45 on ending Senate debate on the nomination, falling 5 votes short of the needed 60.
The successful filibuster sets up a “nuclear option” showdown later in the day as Republicans have vowed to change Senate rules in order to force through Donald Trump’s Supreme Court pick.
Four Democrats broke with their party and joined Republicans in voting for cloture. Democrats Joe Donnelly, Heidi Heitkamp, Joe Manchin, and Michael Bennet all voted with Republicans.
