Alabama’s Republican Governor Will Resign Amid Sex, Ethics Scandal
Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has reached an agreement with lawmakers and law enforcement to resign.
Alabama’s Republican Governor Robert Bentley plans to resign on Monday amid an ongoing ethics investigation into his relationship with an adviser. Local media outlets have reported that Bentley has reached an agreement with lawmakers and state law enforcement officials to resign on Monday.
Alabama lawmakers initiated impeachment hearings on Monday just a few days after the state’s Ethics Commission found probable cause that Bentley had violated campaign finance rules.
In response, Bentley reached a deal with legislators to resign in order to avoid an impeachment fight.
Bentley is accused of using his position to cover up the affair including threatening staffers, firing the state’s top law enforcement official and using official vehicles to ferry Mason around the state.
According to a report by Montgomery attorney Jack Sharman, a special counsel working for the Alabama House Judiciary Committee, Bentley even tried to use state law enforcement officials to break off the relationship.
Alabama’s Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey will be sworn in to replace Bentley.
