Paul Manafort Forced To Register As A Foreign Agent

Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman is registering as a foreign agent, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday. Paul Manafort has been in negotiations with the Justice Department since about the whether he will need to register as a foreign agent.

Manafot’s spokesperson said, “Since before the 2016 election, Mr. Manafort has been in discussions with federal authorities about the advisability of registering under [Foreign Agents Registration Act] for some of his past political work.”

Donald Trump’s former national security adviser was also forced to register as a foreign agent for lobbying work he did for the nation of Turkey.

In August, a lobbying firm tied to Paul Manafort also registered as a foreign agent for lobbying work that Paul Manafort oversaw. According to the Associated Press, “the firm of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy, Rick Gates, who served in a senior role in the Trump campaign, had overseen the lobbying effort. The effort sought to promote a pro-Russian Ukrainian political party’s interests in Washington.”

The AP also reported on Wednesday that financial records confirm that Paul Manafort received at least $1.2 million in “off the books” payments tied to the handwritten Ukrainian ledger.

Manafort is currently part of an FBI investigation into collusion between Trump campaign members and Russia during the 2016 election.
