Trump Inappropriately Used Intelligence Resources To Manufacture Evidence For Wiretap Tweet: Report
Donald Trump’s politicization of intelligence resources is an effort to distract from Russia investigation.
The evidence is mounting that Donald Trump and the White House inappropriately used intelligence resources in order to manufacture evidence for Donald Trump’s baseless wiretap tweet claiming President Obama ordered surveillance of Trump Tower.
A new report by the New Yorker paints a picture of a White House in chaos desperately trying to find something, anything to back up Donald Trump ridiculous accusation.
The report quotes one source that emphatically disputes that the Obama administration did anything wrong. “There’s absolutely nothing there,” the source told the New Yorker.
The New Yorker reported sources within the intelligence community said that “the White House said, ‘We are going to mobilize to find something to justify the President’s tweet that he was being surveilled.’ They put out an all-points bulletin…and said, ‘We need to find something that justifies the President’s crazy tweet about surveillance at Trump Tower.’ And I’m telling you there is no way you get that from those transcripts, which are about as plain vanilla as can be.”
The Trump administration’s use of intelligence resources to manufacture evidence to back up a false claim from the president is an alarming revelation and it has damaging consequences for national security.
This administration’s politicization of intelligence resources could lead to Congress deciding now to renew the law that gives the NSA it’s surveillance authority.
According to the New Yorker report, “Some American intelligence officials are now concerned that Trump and Nunes’s wild claims about intercepts and Rice have made Section 702 look like a rogue program that can be easily abused for political purposes. The intelligence source said, ‘In defense of the President, Devin Nunes and some other partisans have created a huge political problem by casting doubt, in the service of Donald Trump, on these intercepts.'”
And it appears that Donald Trump’s political stunt has been successful because the Intelligence Committees are using resources to look into the Obama administration’s use of surveillance – despite there being no evidence to suggest that investigation is warrented – instead of putting all their investigative resources into the Russian investigation.
