Republican Health Bill Covers Just 5 Percent Of Pre-Existing Conditions: Report
Sick people would be charged significantly more for health insurance leading to loss of coverage.
Republicans are insisting that they have allocated money to subsidize the high-risk pools for people with pre-existing conditions but a new study finds there nowhere near enough money to protect people with pre-existing health conditions.
According to a study by Avalere Health, the Republican bill allocates just $23 billion specifically for people with pre-existing conditions which would cover only 110,000 people. However, that amounts to just 5 percent of the 2.2 million people with pre-existing conditions currently enrolled in the individual market under Obamacare.
The study also notes that even if states added all of the $100 billion Patient and State Stability Fund in the Republican bill, that would only cover 600,000 people – far short of the 2.2 million people with pre-existing conditions.
According to the Avalere Health study, “Texas alone has approximately 190,000 enrollees in its individual market with pre-existing chronic conditions, nearly 80,000 more people than the funds earmarked for the entire country would cover.”
“Florida has 205,000, nearly 95,000 more than the funds allotted nationally … would cover.”
