MSNBC Wins Cable News Race As Fox News Falls To Third Place In Prime Time
For the first time in 17 years, Fox News finished in third place in prime-time viewership among the key 18 to 54 ratings demo.
And Fox News misfortune seems to be MSNBC’s good fortune as MSNBC finished first in the key 25-54 demographic and in total viewers against Fox and CNN last week for the first time in its 21-year existence, according to Nielsen Research.
And overall, MSNBC finished second in all of basic cable. TNT, which aired NBA playoff games, was the most watched cable network.
For the week of May 15, MSNBC weekday prime averaged 2.44 million total viewers, with Fox second with 2.405 million and CNN third with 1.649 million. And for adults aged 25-54, MSNBC averaged 611,000 viewers. CNN finished second with 589,000 and Fox third with 497,000.
“The Rachel Maddow Show” continued to be the most-watched cable news show. In fact, Maddow was the most watched non-sports program all week.
Lawrence O’Donnell, who still doesn’t have a contract past June 4, was the second most-watched show in cable news for the week.
