62 Percent Of Americans Think Government Should Provide Health Care For All Americans

A new poll confirms that Americans’ opinions about the government’s role in the health care system have shifted dramatically.

According to the new AP/NORC poll, 62 percent of Americans say it is the federal government’s responsibility to make sure that all Americans have health care coverage.

The poll found that more than 8 in 10 Democrats and 3 in 10 Republicans say health coverage is a federal responsibility. Among independents 54 percent saying coverage is a federal responsibility and 44 percent saying it is not.

The GOP attempt to repeal Obamacare is causing a shift in Americans’ opinions about health care

“The survey findings from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicate a change in public attitudes over the past few months, as concerns mounted about GOP legislation estimated to leave tens of millions without coverage,” the Associated Press noted.

The results show a dramatic shift from a March poll when the country was largely split about the government’s role in providing health insurance. The March poll found that 52 percent of Americans believed the government should provide insurance for all Americans, while 47 percent said it was not the government’s responsibility.

The poll results show that Americans overwhelmingly oppose the Republican plan to repeal and replace Obamacare.

About the poll: The AP-NORC poll of 1,019 adults was conducted July 13-17 using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
