Trump Justice Department Is Actually Arguing Civil Rights Law Doesn’t Apply To Gays
The Trump administration is conducting a massive legal assault on LGBTQ Americans.
The Trump Justice Department argued in a federal lawsuit on Wednesday that the 1964 Civil Rights Act does not protect gay people from discrimination in the workplace.
Justice Department lawyers wrote in an amicus brief that the ban on sex discrimination does not include sexual orientation and that is up to Congress to alter the relevant provision of the 1964 law.
BuzzFeed News noted that “The Trump administration’s filing is unusual in part because the Justice Department isn’t a party in the case, and the department doesn’t typically weigh in on private employment lawsuits.”
The ACLU blasted the Justice Department saying, “The Sessions-led Justice Department and the Trump administration are actively working to expose people to discrimination.”
The news that the Trump administration is trying to argue that gays are not protected under federal civil rights protections comes on the same day that Donald Trump announced via Twitter that transgender Americans would no longer be allowed to join the military.
