Another Poll Finds More Troubling Numbers For Donald Trump

200 days into his presidency, Trump’s poll numbers are at rock bottom.

Just six months into his presidency, Donald Trump’s approval ratings are at historic lows, a new CNN poll finds.

According to the poll, just 38 percent say that they approve of Donald Trump’s handling of the presidency.

At the same time, 56 percent of Americans say that they disapprove of Trump’s job performance.

The poll also found that “three-quarters of Americans say they can’t trust most of what they hear from the White House.”

As CNN points out, Trump’s numbers aren’t just low, they are historically low. “Just one other newly-elected president has held an approval rating below 50% at this point in his presidency since modern polling began: Bill Clinton, whose approval rating stood at 44% at this point in 1993.”

Trump’s base is eroding

A series of recent polls have found that Trump’s base of support is eroding. And the CNN poll seems to confirm that. According to the CNN data, 47 percent say that they strongly disapprove of Trump’s job as president. While just 24 percent say that they strongly approve of Trump’s job performance.

But probably more troubling for Trump is that his overall approval rating among Republicans is now 59 percent. In February, that number was 73 percent.

CNN goes on to note, “Among whites who do not have college degrees, a core component of Trump’s base, just 35% strongly approve, down 12 points since February. At the same time, strong disapproval among Democrats has held steady around 80%.”

Trump’s basic competence is in question among Republicans and independents who lean Republican. According to CNN, Trump’s ability to “manage the government effectively has dipped 10 points.”

Americans consider Trump’s first 200 days as a failure

The poll also found that Americans are increasingly convinced that Trump’s first 6 months in office have been a failure. Just 36 percent say that Trump’s first 200 days have been a success with 59 percent saying it was a failure.

As CNN notes, “Both Barack Obama and George W. Bush were viewed as successful at this stage of their presidency by most Americans (56% for Bush, 51% for Obama).”

Even more troubling for Trump, it seems his words and actions just make Americans less confident in him. According to CNN, “62% overall say that Trump’s statements and actions since taking office have made them less confident in his ability to be president. Half of whites without college degrees share that view.”

Other key numbers from the poll:

  • 59 percent say Trump hasn’t paid enough attention to the country’s most important problems
  • 58 percent say Trump’s management style and the high rate of turnover in the West Wing hurts the administration’s ability to be effective
  • 62 percent say Trump has done a poor job assembling a team of top advisers to work in the White House
  • Just 30 percent say they admire the President
  • Only 34 percent say they are proud to have him as president
  • 55 percent say he has lowered the stature of the office of the president
  • 60 percent say they don’t consider Trump honest and trustworthy

About the poll: The CNN Poll was conducted by SSRS by telephone August 3 through 6 among a random national sample of 1,018 adults. The margin of sampling error for results among the full sample is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points, it is larger for subgroups.
