Democrats Get Upset Victory Iowa House District That Went For Trump
Dems get another special election win.
In another sign that Democrats have the momentum going into the 2018 midterm elections, Democrats pulled off a victory in Iowa’s 82nd state House district.
The district had been trending away from Democrats. After voting for former President Barack Obama twice, Iowa’s 82nd district went heavily for Trump last year.
However, Democrat Phil Miller, a veterinarian, won the special election contest in the district with 54 percent of the vote Tuesday.
Miller is also on the local school board.
After the win Miller told Radio Iowa, “I’m just overwhelmed with happiness now, I guess, just for all of the voters of our district, all of the folks who have been helping me the past few weeks. This is just an energizing and thrilling experience.”
While Democrats have lost all of this year’s congressional special elections, they have had far more success in state legislative districts.
Carolyn Fiddler who is a former DLCC official but is now an editor at Daily Kos blog wrote, “Democrats have not only wrested four seats from Republicans, but they’ve also outperformed Democratic presidential numbers from just last fall in 24 out of 31 contested congressional and state legislative elections.”
According to the Des Moines Register, “House District 82 covers parts of Davis, Van Buren and Jefferson counties. It’s politically balanced, with 6,257 registered Democrats, 6,611 registered Republicans and 5,738 registered voters with no party affiliation.”
