Two Key Manafort Associates Just Got Subpoenas: Reporteport

Special Counsel is turning the screws on Paul Manafort.

If it wasn’t clear before that Paul Manafort is a key focus of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, we just got some more confirmation of that.

Special Counsel investigators have issued a grand jury subpoena to Paul Manafort’s spokesman Jason Maloni and his attorney Melissa Laurenza, CNN has reported.

The subpoenas are for records their work with Paul Manafort.

In addition to the record request, Maloni is being required to testify before the grand jury.

As CNN notes, “Manafort is under investigation for possible tax and financial crimes, according to US officials briefed on the investigation. The allegations under investigation largely center on Manafort’s work for the former ruling party in Ukraine, which was ousted amid street protests over its pro-Russian policies.”

Manafort’s attorney would be able to claim attorney client privilege unless the attorney acted in a business capacity and not as counsel. Any illegal activity that an attorney engages in is also not protected by attorney client privilege.

The new subpoenas are just the latest in dozens that Special Counsel Mueller’s investigating team has sent out.
