Effort To Remove Trump From Office Gaining Momentum In The House As 25 Democrats Sign On
The effort to remove Donald Trump is gaining momentum as 25 House Democrats have now signed on to the effort.
Yahoo News’ Michael Isikoff is reporting that a group of 25 House Democrats, including former DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, have been quietly working on legislation to remove Donald Trump.
But the effort is taking a different approach to removing Trump from office. Instead of traditional impeachment proceedings, the Democrats are planning to use the 25th Amendment.
Specifically, the lawmakers want to use Section 4 of the 25th Amendment and create an “Oversight Commission on Presidential Capacity.”
Section 4 was created after the assassination of John F Kennedy to allow for a separate body to remove the president based on mental or physical capacity.
However, the 25 House Democrats are citing Donald Trump’s erratic behavior and tweets as evidence he’s mentally incapacitated to serve.
According to the Yahoo report, after this week’s tweets about Mika Brzezinski, the effort gained four more House Democrats.
The next step would be to have Congress pass the “Oversight Commission on Presidential Capacity” legislation which would create the body. The commission would include three former presidents and vice presidents (or other senior government officials) as well as four psychiatrists and four physicians.
Isikoff’s report notes the despite the fact that no Republicans have publically signed on to the effort, a number of them have privately expressed interest.
Donald Trump would almost certainly reject the legislation meaning that it would then require two-thirds of both the House and Senate to reverse Trump’s rejection.
Then Vice President Mike Pence would have to sign off on the decision to invoke the 25 Amendment.
