Office of Government Ethics: Donald Trump plan is ‘Wholly Inadequate’

Today, Donald Trump announced that he is going to do essentially nothing to resolve his mountain of conflicts of interests. And shortly after Trump’s announcement, in what is an unprecedented move, the director of the Office of Government Ethics publicly called out Donald Trump’s completed lack of a plan to separate himself from his business interests before he becomes president.

The director of the Office of Government Ethics, Walter Shaub, said that Donald Trump’s plan, “doesn’t meet the standards” that other presidents have met.

Mr. Shaub went on to say, “I wish circumstances were different and I didn’t feel the need to make public remarks today.”

According to The Hill,  Shaub made the remarks at the Brookings Institution and quoted Mr. Shaub as saying Trump’s plan to separate himself from his business was “wholly inadequate.” 
And he went on to say that, “The plan the [President-elect] has announced doesn’t meet the standards that the best of his nominees are meeting and that every president in the last four decades have met. We can’t risk the perception that government leaders would use their official positions for professional profit.”

Shaub also responded to Donald Trump’s repeated claim that presidents cannot have conflicts of interest. To that Shaub said that’s “quite obviously not true.”

“I think the most charitable way to understand such statements is that they are referring to a particular conflict-of-interest law that does not apply to the president,” he said, adding “common sense dictates that the president can of course have very real conflicts of interests.”

No plan to resolve conflicts of interests

Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that rather than sell off his business assets or set up a blind trust, he would actually just put his sons in charge of his company. And when he is finished with the presidency, he plans to return to his company and examine the work of his sons to make sure they did a good job.
But don’t worry, Donald Trump promises he won’t talk to his son’s about the business anymore.
